charles "teenie" harris

click to view larger teenie harris
teenie harris has been an influence on me for quite some time. he was born in 1908 pittburgh and was a founding member of the pittsburgh crawford's, an historic negro league baseball team.
harris started taking photos for the pittsburgh courier in his 20's but it wasn't until he was nearly 80 that he had his first public exhibition of his photos in pittsburgh.

aside from the news photos teenie shot for the courier, harris would like to take photos of people in everyday life and music performers/bands in clubs in and around his community.

this past sunday i went with a couple friends for the afternoon to the carnegie museum of art in pittsburgh and had the chance to view:

"Documenting Our Past; The Teenie Harris Archive Project, Part Two"

this exhibition is going to be shown through july 30 2006 and i highly recommend this show and pittsburgh's carnegie museum of art.

the museum has hundreds of teenie's photos on there website.

Great post, Lou. I've been digging through that archive for a few days now. I can see how he'd be an inspiration for you.

thanks adam. i browsed all thousand on the CMOA site and was tempted to save them to a folder so i can browse after they remove them (i believe they have them up there so people can ID the subjects/area of the many untitled shots they have in that collection.
