I've mostly finished processing my photos from the BIG SHOW and have uploaded them here. I only shot a few videos because I spotted several peeps with video cameras that was doing a fine job documenting the event, I will link those sources in my next post.

Many thanks go out again to the Council Of Chiefs and everyone else that put so much time making the day a success. Ron Kretch of the Scene has been blogging about these last couple months as well and his posts can be found here.

Beat Vikings - Lottery League Practice Sessions

Beat Vikings are: John Delzoppo, Christa Ebert, Christopher Burge & Ed Stevens.

The Beat Vikings practice at was formerly known as 'The [Old] Tower' which was the sweetest DIY space or club on the west-side for a minute until they relocated to 'Tower 2012' up the street and then Now Thats Class became a major player. I have many of those Tower show memories erupt whenever I walk into John Delzoppo's space that he uses as a recording studio as well as a living space.

This Sunday morning the Beat Vikings were honing their set with a jazz type number when I arrived at 1pm, the remaining half hour the band worked on a song that I refer to as 'The Viking Song" in the video and audio file below. The 'Viking Song' highlights each of the band members talents, the final result was quite impressive.

Bongo Make Manscape - Lottery League Practice Sessions

Bongo Make Manscape consists of: Joey Milan, Ruwani Kiringoda, Ian P.E. and Pablo Cerda.

Many of the 2010 Lottery League bands have been rehearsing their sets till they are comfortable with the timing and fluidity of the songs before they begin rehearsing them with vocals and BMM is one of those bands. Ruwani has been writing lyrics and Joe was contemplating about where to place the vocals during their songs, that happen to have several tempo changes.
Joe mentioned that he has not sung vocals since his part in the Musical "Browns Rules", a production the Cleveland Public Theater produced last year. I am looking forward to how this band evolves, that wait is less than two weeks away [April 10], break a leg, Lottery League players!

Devils Feet - Lottery League Practice Sessions

Devil's Feet consists of: Mike Rodemann, Brent Gemmill, Christopher Hoke & Justin Nyilas. DF has had a handful of practices but this was the first with Justin since their first. The band has written and practiced a couple solid songs since then and they were in the process of orienting Justin to what they had completed without the bass guitar.
I captured tentatively titled 'Dance!' & 'Not Breathing, Anymore' during this rehearsal as they were incorporating the bassist. A video and Mp3 file are both below, photos are here.

Brent shares this comfortable space that dubs as a recording studio with David Cintron, Dave also uses the space for his Lottery League band 'Melted Face Constitutional", I hope to catch their practice next week.

Final Expenses - Lottery League Practice Sessions

Final Expenses [Band 2] is: Mike Uva, John Neeley, Greg Hyland & Shannon Kerrigan.
This band practice was the first as a full band due to illness and scheduling conflicts, Final Expenses had a couple songs written and were working on chords, harmony and timing with those songs this afternoon. The band plans to write lyrics for the vocal parts which made rehearsing the vocal and harmonies a little awkward.

As always, be sure to keep in mind that the videos and audio posted here are from *practices* of musicians that never performed together previously. The video below is a first run of a song that plans to include vocal harmonies but has no lyrics yet so it would be wise not to expect Crosby , Stills & Nash at this point. Here is a handful of pics from the rehearsal.

Tape Worms - Lottery League Practice Sessions

Tape Worms are Elijah Vazquez, Sebastian Wagner and Stephe DK.

Despite of having lost a member and thus conforming as a trio, the Tape Worms sounded as if they have been together much more than the two weeks that they have. The video and Mp3 I've posted below are part of a lengthy jam of the hour+ I visited the Tape Worm space.
Stephe mentioned that he plans to have vocals for the final cuts. That is what I believe is the most valuable part of these LLPS posts, what i have documented is subjected to change and said change may sound quite different than the finished product at the BIG SHOW.

The Elks - After The Meeting :: LLPS

Our band The Elks have gone through a month of practice and are at the stage of refining our set and fulfilling our obligations as a Lottery League band, that includes a band photo, logo and bio, submitted in less than two weeks [March 31].

The image on the left is a logo I came up for the band and it is undergoing small changes, therefore it is still unofficial. As for the band photo, we have a lot to choose from after our five hour video-shoot [not required] yesterday. The bio is another story and I'm not exactly sure where that is at but I'm not totally opposed with having the CoC's supply that for us which they threatened to do for those that don't comply with the deadlines.

I have been honing my skills on the theremin, this entails waving ones hands about as if one was attempting to take flight with only the use of their arms as wings. I am not sure if the theremin has added anything of value to the song itself but it is sure fun to play with.

The Redd Foxx Memorial Band - Lottery League Practice Sessions

The Redd Foxx Memorial Band & Tre Fa La Ha Orchestar [band 3] is RA Washington, Sean Djuricic, Gabe Schray, Eric Koltnow & Sean Kilbane.

The RFMB was without Sean Kilbane tonight, though the band has yet to have the full orchestar together for a practice yet, the band seems to have found their sound. The vibrophone that Eric was playing really fits in well with the vibe [no pun intended] of the group.

Milk & Cookies - Lottery League Practice Sessions

Milk And Cookies [Band 9] Consists of Jonathan Morgan, Jim Karpinski, Lauren Voss & Jack Geers [Smiley].

M&C has the most practices under their belt [5] than any other LL band I visited to date and it shows, the band has three songs written and is at the refinement stage of rehearsing, trying to get the songs to the proper length while tweaking this or that.

The video below was shot in Jacks upstairs office that dubs as the practice space, the afternoon sun was at full bore on this Sunday and made photography a challenge as I tried to shoot into it from the other side of this quaint space.
The song was referred to as "that jazzy thing" by Laura, I don't think any of the songs have yet been titled.

The MP3 below is a rock song that has Laura Voss on vocals.

World War V - Lottery League Practice Sessions

World War V [Band 15] is: Stanton Thatcher [drums], Rich Raponi [guitar], Maura McGrath [bass], Miss Melvis [vocals, guitar].

WWV started their practice with a song [tentatively titled "Ground Zero"] that they worked on during their previous that was their first as a band. Miss Melvis houses a cozy practice/recording space in her basement that had a nice bright sound.
The video below I shot, has the band rehearsing that song but the vocals are plugged straight to Mel's record deck [no vocals on video].

The embedded audio file below is of a song that was written and performed for the first time, therefore the "Drum March" [as Stanton referred to it] is a *rough take* and may not even make it into their final set but it is an interesting example of how bands that never performed together, evolve.

Google - Lottery League Practice Session

March 5, 2009 - Lottery League Practice Sessions

Google [band 32] consists of Dominic Ricciardi [drums], Alex Henry [horn], Brendan Sedlak [guitar], Tony Vorell [guitar, xylophone].

When I walked into Google's practice, they were working on their 10 minute masterpiece, breaking down the song in parts and pieces and using the chalkboard extensively.

I arrived towards the last hour of the practice and the band seemed to be in the refinement stage of creating the instrumental. The video below has the band working an intricate portion of the song, the video is just one of the several takes of the same piece that they were trying to master.
Below the video is a six minute mp3 of a rough take of the complete song that happens to be incomplete.

Though the band is just partially through with completion of the piece, I dug the flow and feel of the song, reminding me of Brendan's days in Self Destruct Button.

The Elks - New Fez, New Suit

"new fez, new suit" was the first song the band worked on and practiced together, greg had the idea of the band being pseudo-elks, as in the mens fraternal social club that meet up at "lodges".

i was chosen [via the letter L] in the *bonus* round of the 2010 lottery league by band #27. our second practice was this past tuesday evening, this night consisted mostly of refining the two songs that were written during the first practice and creating a third ballet-type song.
it appears that the longest song is going to come in at the 3 minute range with the others being approximately half that length.

the video below has the band working on that 3rd song, keep in mind that any video/audio i post here are rough takes, the structure of these songs have changed from practice to practice [yes, both of them].

2010 Lottery League Draft

The 2010 version of the Lottery League Draft that took place last Friday night at the Beachland Ballroom went off nearly as flawless as the 2008 version that was held at Asterisk Gallery in Tremont. Most of the kinks were worked out beforehand and The Council of Chiefs learned some valuable lessons from LL2008.

Not unlike 2008, names were pulled out of a bingo-hopper with the first round reserved for drummers, half of those being drummers with practice spaces. The drummers without practice space would be paired with a musician from the second round that has a practice space. The next two rounds would be for the remaining musicians not yet picked.

One of the new changes in this year's LL2010 is that the fifth round would be a bonus round of sorts, a representative from 12 randomly picked bands chose a letter or number that spelled out LOTTERY LEAGUE 2010, each of those letters/numbers were assigned a "prize" or a bonus member that may or may not be a musician [I fell into this category/round]. Prizes included a Melt gift certificate, a Rock Hall package and four admissions to the Cleveland Zoo. Bonus members beside myself included Jae Kristoff [The Head Chief of Council], Tony Erba, PJ Doran, Matthew T & Nick Traenkner are a few that I remember.
Also new to this year's draft was a Lottery League Hall Of Fame commemoration that awarded certificates to those Lottery League bands that continued as bands after the 2008 season ended, those bands were: Anal Cheetahs, Mohammad Cartoon [both bands performed at this years draft], Gandhi SS, Stimulus Package & The Valley Of Life. Veteran LL participant and former Tremont Art Auctioneer Joe Milan did a great job as the emcee, I did not hear one complaint about mispronunciation from 150 or so names he called this night. Guest bingo-hopper operators included: Cindy Barber, Kathy Simkoff, Mark Leddy & the Beachland Lady cop. Next up for each band is finding a name and configuring a practice schedule.

MOCA has their big summer opening this friday the 5th of june. 'there goes the neighborhood' is the title and artists were asked to express their art with their local communities represented in the work.
the 11 artists come from all over the globe including 'amy casey' whom is coming off the victory of 'the cleveland art prize' for emerging artist. i've spoke a quite deal of amy casey's work in the past so i'll spare you anymore lecturing.
just go see the show, it runs through august 16, 2009.

There Goes the Neighborhood explores the evolution of communities here and abroad. The exhibition focuses on how architecture and landscape embody a neighborhood's past, present, and potential future. The work on view examines places amid growth or decline, sites that hover somewhere between construction, deterioration, and renewal. The artists reveal how physical sites symbolize the human experience of change, whether simple or complex, invited or forced. Linking actual and anticipated shifts in communities across the globe, There Goes the Neighborhood emphasizes the evolving structures and compositions of neighborhoods in the twenty-first century.

The exhibition features artists from different regions and cultures who are responding to shifts in communities around the world. Some focus on particular sites. Representing blighted neighborhoods in New Orleans, Cleveland, and Leipzig, the works of Willie Birch, Amy Casey, and Clemens von Wedemeyer uncover political issues embedded in the architecture of these places. Eva Struble and Dionsio Gonzàlez focus on marginalized Spanish, Brazilian, and Vietnamese communities and their complex relationships within their regions. Leslie Grant and Nina Pessin-Whedbee, with support from Carolyn Strauss of slowLAB and artistic contribution by Leah Beeferman, examine the Domino Sugar Factory and its evolving neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York.

Other artists look beyond particular neighborhoods to explore overarching factors effecting change. Catherine Yass examines the Three Gorges Dam, which has radically displaced or destroyed hundreds of Chinese communities. Kristin Bly uses a common structure - the front porch - to consider critical economic and social issues affecting neighborhoods here and throughout the country. Matthew Kolodziej abstracts scenes of architectural construction and destruction to emphasize their allegorical value. Cao Fei expands the boundaries of community into the fluid environment of virtual reality.

As Cao Fei's work suggests, neighborhoods are not just constructed environments; they are performative spaces in which we build lives and memories. Yet, our experiences are tied to the physical architecture and landscape of our communities. Ranging in tone from alarm to ambivalence to hope about the evolution of these places, There Goes the Neighborhood emphasizes the cycle of change, in which deterioration is inevitably followed by renewal and revitalization. In doing so, the exhibition asks us to consider our relationship to, and influence upon, the present and future expressions of our neighborhoods.

CICLI POLITO of cleveland wins 'best in show' at NAHBS in indy!

i'ld like to send out congratulations to clevelands own: dan polito of 'cicli polito' for the 'best in show' award at the 'north american handmade bicycle show' that took place earlier this month in indianapolis.
dan asked me just before he left if i was going to make it out there and all i could do is frown with the reality of having to work that weekend.
the NAHBS has been growing each year and has a plethora of talented handmade bicycle builders take part in the competition and cleveland should be proud that one of the most talented of them calls cleveland home.

the photo above has dan posing for the shot with one of his bikes and the huge backdrop that was created by another clevelander: 'john g'. dan described the huge piece to me weeks ago but i didn't realize it would be that large. john is in the middle of a his 'flyer month' project where he creates a new flyer for each day in the month, i'm thinking someone wishes that they chose february..
the design on dans shirt in that photo was also designed by john for the cleveland band 'sun god'.

cleveland lottery league wrap-up

the last musical event of the inaugural cleveland lottery league went down this weekend at the beachland ballroom with a CD release show that had several bands of the league performing on stage. the visual art [documentation] was also on display at 'art collinwood' which is about 50 paces west of the ballroom.
the best part of the evening was the bands, there are videos of 'twist it nasty' & 'valley of life' i shot here.
i have to run to work in a few minutes so i'll quickly go over some important points of the LL event.

i'm was a little apprehensive about this upcoming art show mainly because the show was just a week away and i still didn't know what was exactly asked of me besides that they wanted me to display some of my photos from the lottery league experiment that lasted 10 weeks last winter.
the LL was the most time i have ever spent on one project and included nearly 50 photo shoots of the draft, band practices, bowling outings and the 'BIG SHOW' that had 33 bands perform in one evening.

i will have about sixty photos displayed, laura webb, mike levy, ron kretch & perhaps some others will have photos displayed of LL as well.

the details from this event that i copied from the beachland ballroom are below.

In April 2008, a group of 130 musicians and volunteers who playfully called themselves "The Council of Chiefs" presented LOTTERY LEAGUE: THE BIG SHOW to a packed house at the Beachland Ballroom. This large-scale musical project, many months and hours in the making, brought an injection of innovation and fun to Cleveland's already-thriving underground music scene. Through the Lottery League, randomly-generated bands wrote, performed and recorded new music. All involved made new friends, got new thrills, and had a blast being part of a groundbreaking experience.

Those months may have come and gone, but the Lottery League legacy lives on. From February 6, the Beachland will once again host many of the bands from THE BIG SHOW--as well as others who may have popped up in the wake of the League. What's bringing everybody back again? The release of the LOTTERY LEAGUE CD, featuring artwork, photos, studio recordings from the bands, along with live performances from THE BIG SHOW. Also helping to bring back the fun of THE BIG SHOW is Arts Collinwood, who over the course of these two nights will be showing photos and video work by Mike Levy, Laura Webb, Lou Muenz, and others who chronicled the Lottery League and its various escapades.

If you dug THE BIG SHOW the first time, you'll really want to attend this two-night extravaganza. If you didn't check out this now-Cleveland Classic, come out and see what all the hubbub was about! With any luck, and a little bit of beer, this special LOTTERY LEAGUE event will be just as jaw-droppingly awesome as last year's!
